The 2024 class

Skenes debuted for the Pirates in May 2024 as the reigning #1 overall pick, and that’s the year his core rookie cards were printed across Topps and Bowman. The names to know:

• 2024 Topps Update & Topps Chrome Update — his official RC-logo rookie cards. The paper 2024 Topps Update flagship rookie is the accessible, official version; 2024 Topps Chrome Update is the chromium version and is where the refractors and colored parallels live.
• 2024 Bowman Chrome (#31) — despite the Bowman name, this is an RC-flagged card in the MLB base set, and there is no Skenes autograph in the product.
• 2023 Bowman Draft — the actual prospect line and his 1st Bowman year: BD-14 (paper, flagged “1st”), BDC-14 (Chrome), and the CDA-PS Chrome Prospect Autograph, the grail of his early market.

Identify the exact rookie card by number

These get confused in listing titles, so match the printed card number on the back before you buy:

• 2023 Bowman Draft — BD-14 / BDC-14. His 1st Bowman and 1st Bowman Chrome, plus the CDA-PS autograph. Prospect cards, no RC logo, and the top of his market.
• 2024 Bowman Chrome — #31. In the MLB base set between Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (#30) and Nolan Arenado (#32), and RC-flagged. No autograph version exists.

Every refractor, colored parallel and autograph of a given card carries that same base number — the color, serial stamp, or “AU” marking on the back tells you the parallel, not a different card. If a listing’s number doesn’t match one of these, you’re either looking at a different Skenes product or it’s worth a closer look at the photos before you buy.

What drives the price

Three things, in order: parallel (base vs refractor vs numbered color — see Skenes parallels & refractors explained), autograph or not, and grade. A raw base card and a low-numbered graded refractor auto are worlds apart in value.
