Paul Skenes 1st Bowman vs Topps Rookie Card: Which Should You Buy?
Paul Skenes's 1st Bowman is 2023 Bowman Draft BD-14 / BDC-14 — not 2024 Bowman Chrome, which is actually an RC-flagged card. Why the prospect card outsells the official rookies, and which to buy for your goal. Prices shown are live eBay listings.

If you have shopped for a Paul Skenes rookie, you have hit the confusion head-on: his most expensive card isn’t technically a “rookie card” at all. His priciest, most chased card is the 2024 1st Bowman Chrome — a prospect card. His official RC-logo rookies are separate, Topps cards. This page untangles the two, explains why the prospect card costs more than the “real” rookie, and helps you decide which to buy — with live eBay rails so you can compare every version side by side today. As always, we don’t quote dollar figures; the buttons open the current market.
Prospect card vs official rookie: the one distinction that matters
Two different cards get called “the Skenes rookie,” and they are not the same thing:
- 1st Bowman Chrome (prospect card) — 2023, not 2024. His first Bowman card is 2023 Bowman Draft BD-14, flagged “1st” on the checklist, with BDC-14 the Chrome version. Printed while he was still a prospect, so it does not carry the RC logo. It is, by a wide margin, his most valuable open-market card, and the Chrome Prospect Autograph CDA-PS is the headliner. Careful: 2024 Bowman Chrome #31 is a different card and IS RC-flagged, and 2024 Bowman Chrome’s “My 1st Bowman” insert (M1B-36) is a retrospective, not a 1st Bowman.
- Topps RC-logo rookies (official rookies). Once Skenes debuted, he got licensed base-set cards stamped with the small RC shield — the hobby’s official “rookie card” marker (a standard on Topps flagship since 2006). His live in 2024 Topps Update (paper) and 2024 Topps Chrome Update (chrome), plus their parallels.
So both labels are “correct” in casual use — but only the Topps cards carry the RC logo, and only the 1st Bowman carries the first-card cachet. Knowing which one a listing is describing is the whole game.
Why the prospect card costs more than the official rookie
It feels backwards that the card without the RC logo is the expensive one. The reason is simple: the hobby pays up for the earliest card of a star, and it pays even more when that card is signed. The 1st Bowman Chrome came first and its top parallels are on-card autos, so it stacks first-card cachet, the autograph, and a refractor rainbow that runs up to low-numbered colored refractors and the 1/1 Superfractor. The RC logo is a nice badge, but it isn’t what drives his top prices — being first is.
Which should you buy?
Match the card to your goal:
- You want the marquee chase (and the signature). Buy the 2023 Bowman Draft Chrome Prospect Auto, CDA-PS. It’s the headliner, the most liquid at the high end, and the card most people mean when they say “the Skenes.” Its refractors and numbered parallels sit above the base.
- You want his official, RC-logo rookie — at a friendlier entry. Buy the 2024 Topps Update paper RC (the accessible official-rookie entry) or the 2024 Topps Chrome Update RC (chrome stock, refractors, the RC-logo card most collectors picture). These are his “real” rookie cards for anyone who insists on the shield.
- You want a non-auto Bowman at a lower price. A 1st Bowman Chrome base or refractor (no autograph) gets you the coveted first-card design without the auto premium.
- You’re buying to resell or want zero condition risk. Buy any of the above already in a PSA 10 — the grade authenticates the card and maximizes liquidity. See our PSA 10 vs raw breakdown for when the graded premium is worth it.
There’s no wrong answer — a set collector chasing the official RC and a high-end buyer chasing the 1st Bowman auto are both “right.” Just know which market you’re shopping before you bid.
Buy-safe on both
The same rules protect you either way. On the 1st Bowman auto, buy it graded or manufacturer-certified and match the cert number to the photos — signed cards are where fakes concentrate. On any card, confirm the year and set in the listing (a “1st Bowman” and a “Topps Update RC” are different cards at different prices), read the parallel and numbering, and check sold comps in both directions before you commit. When in doubt, start from our rookie cards overview or the Paul Skenes hub.
