2024 Bowman Chrome #31 Paul Skenes — an RC, Not His 1st Bowman

2024 Bowman Chrome #31 Paul Skenes is one of the most mis-described cards in his catalogue, including on this page until August 2026. Two things are true and both matter before you buy:

1. #31 is an RC-logo rookie card, in the MLB base set — not a prospect card.
2. There is no Skenes autograph in 2024 Bowman Chrome at all. He is on neither the Rookie Autographs nor the Prospect Autographs checklist for that product.

His actual 1st Bowman, and his actual 1st Bowman Chrome autograph, are a year earlier.

His real 1st Bowman: 2023 Bowman Draft

Skenes went first overall in the July 2023 draft out of LSU, and Topps put him in that year’s Bowman Draft:

• BD-14 Paul Skenes — the paper base card, flagged “1st” on the checklist. This is his 1st Bowman.
• BDC-14 — the Chrome version of the same card, and the one collectors mean by “1st Bowman Chrome.” Topps’ own production estimates for that set’s Chrome cards: Chrome 38,250 copies, Chrome Refractor 14,875, Japan Refractor 3,075, Sky Blue Refractor 525, Lunar Glow Refractor 500, Pearl Refractor fifteen. A short-printed Chrome Gimmick of BDC-14 also exists (roughly 350 copies).
• CDA-PS — the 1st Bowman Chrome Prospect Autograph. This is the grail. Its published ladder runs Sparkles Refractor /71, Gold Refractor /50 (with Gold Wave /50 and HTA-exclusive Gold Shimmer /50), Orange Refractor /25 (jumbo packs; Orange Wave /25 in HTA Choice), Red Refractor /5 (with Red Lava /5 and Red Wave /5), the SuperFractor 1/1, and printing plates.
• He also appears in that set at DPP-1 (Draft Picks & Prospects), BDN-7 (Draft Night) and TT-20 (Transformative Talent), plus the unsigned Glass insert BGA-1, with matching autograph versions: DPPA-PS, BDNA-PS, 23A-PS (Class of 2023) and the Glass Autograph BGA-PS (/99).

Why “2024 1st Bowman Chrome” is such a common phrase

Because 2024 Bowman Chrome contains an insert set literally named My 1st Bowman, and Skenes is M1B-36 in it (roughly 4,050 copies, with Gold Refractor /50 and Red Refractor /5 parallels, plus a My 1st Bowman Autographs checklist). It’s a retrospective insert about first Bowman cards. Sellers shorten “My 1st Bowman” to “1st Bowman” and the year attaches itself to the wrong card.

He’s also in a couple of other 2024 Bowman Chrome inserts — BC25-18 (Bowman Chrome 2025) and BGP-14 (Bowman Garbage Pail Kids) — neither of which is a prospect card either.

Identify the exact card

Skenes has several chrome-stock cards and the listing titles blur them:

• 2023 Bowman Draft BDC-14 — the 1st Bowman Chrome. Prospect card, no RC logo. The CDA-PS autograph is a separate card, not this one signed.
• 2024 Bowman Chrome #31 — MLB base set, RC-flagged, chromium stock. No autograph version exists.
• 2024 Topps Chrome Update — his official chromium flagship RC (USC27 and USC88, both RC-flagged), and the home of the Rookie Debut Patch Autograph RDPA-PS.
• 2024 Topps Update — paper flagship. US100 is the RC-flagged card; US288 is his Rookie Debut subset card.

Before you buy, match the card number against the card back in the listing photos. #31 with an RC shield is 2024 Bowman Chrome; BDC-14 with no shield is the 1st Bowman Chrome.

How to buy it

• For anything high-dollar, buy it graded (PSA/SGC/BGS) and match the cert to the photos.
• Treat any “signed 2024 Bowman Chrome Skenes” as a red flag — no such card was issued.
