If you’re new to baseball cards, the vocabulary can feel like a wall. This guide breaks it down in plain English using Paul Skenes — the Pirates’ 2023 #1 overall pick and 2024 NL Rookie of the Year — as the running example, since his card market is unusually compressed: almost everything that matters happened in a single rookie season.

Sets, base, and inserts

Skenes’s rookie-era catalog runs across a small number of 2024 releases: Topps flagship and Topps Chrome Update carry his mainstream base and RC-logo rookie cards, while Bowman Chrome carries his prospect cards. Condition and grading

Condition drives price more than almost anything else. Professional graders (PSA, SGC, BGS) assign a 1-10 grade and seal the card in a slab — and because Skenes’s whole market is one hot rookie season old, the gap between a raw copy and a PSA 10 of the same card tends to run wider than it does for established veterans.
